Car history:
This particular example was built in the last month of production in July 1970 and was the 19th to the last Corvette built (VIN 417316 was the last). This vehicle was treated to a cosmetic restoration consisting of a repaint, seat covers and a convertible top 6 years ago by an unknown company. The paint is in beautiful shape with only 2 minor and hard to see flaws, the interior is in excellent condition and the top is in excellent condition. The top frame is also in excellent condition and opens and closes smoothly without any issues. The top locks down as it should also. The body does not have any issues and the gaps look good. The current owner purchased it soon after the cosmetic restoration was done and immediately started to experience an enormous amount of mechanical problems. The Corvette was brought to Classic Restorations in Pine Island, New York and they did an extensive mechanical restoration to the vehicle. Their restoration can be seen on their website under past projects and 1970 Corvette convertible. There was an enormous amount of problems related to every aspect of the operating condition of the vehicle both due to age, substandard previous repairs and poor workmanship that required an extensive restoration to be done. The following will list the major points of the restoration but is not limited to just the items listed. Basically every component had to be refurbished, rebuilt or replaced and ended up being a spare no expense restoration to bring this car back to a safe, operable and reliable vehicle. Rebuild numbers matching 350/300 motor. Bored .030, new rods, complete valve job, balanced and compression was changed to 9.5:1 to maintain pump fuel requirement. Carburetor and choke were professionally rebuilt. New distributor. New mounts, spark plug shielding, distributor shielding, wires and all else associated with a major tune up. Rebuild power steering pump, cylinder and slave, replace all hoses and linkage. Rebuild steering box. Rebuild alternator. Recore radiator, replace entire cooling system components. Replace entire vehicle wiring harnesses and fiber optics. Rebuild all calipers with stainless steel kits, replace complete brake system including the power booster. Even the pedal bushing was replaced. New rotors, bearings, races and seals on all 4 corners. Rebuild the transmission, new shaft, bearings, gears, synchros and seals. New flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, clutch fork, linkage and pilot bushing. Rebuild the differential and replace all bearings. Replace all 6 u-joints to the driveshaft and half shafts. Balance all shafts. Replace all fuel and brake lines with stainless lines and new hoses. Replace fuel tank and sending unit. Replace entire vacuum system for wipers and headlamps and replace vacuum tank. All new vacuum actuators and trees for the headlamp and wiper system were also replaced. Replace entire wiper control system including limit switches, wiper switch and wiper door transmission with rebuilt unit. The wiper transmission was properly lubricated. The headlamp and wiper system function as they should. The gauges were replaced including the clock and the speedometer and tachomter were restored. The complete heating system was replaced including the control panel. The AM/FM stereo works but is a little tricky on keeping it's station as they were originally. New carpet front and rear along with the compartments and the compartment doors were replaced. The exhaust system was replaced with a correct stainless steel system. The complete front suspension was stripped, blasted, primed and correctly repainted. New ball joints and bushings were installed. The complete rear suspension was replaced including the trailing arms and the rear spring. Stainless steel shims were used. New Bilstein shocks were installed on all 4 corners. Professional 4 wheel alignment. Headlamp linkage was rebuilt with new bushings. Steering column tilt mechanism was rebuilt and column bearings were replaced. Windshield was replaced after patching the rust in the windshield frame opening correctly. New upper dash, speedo panel, passenger side panel, gauge cluster panel and console plate was also replaced. New inside door panels and handles. Door glass regulators were cleaned and lubricated along with new rollers. New ignition lock cylinder and door locks were installed. Convertible top lid had new stops installed and lid and top releases were replaced and new bushings were installed. New courtesy, luggage and spare tire lamps installed. Spare tire carrier was replaced. Completely strip frame and epoxy prime and refinish in correct chassis black. As you can see there was not much left to do. This car drives perfectly and everything works. There are not any vibrations, smoke or any other type of driveability concerns. This is the original color combination. Owner has put about 3000 miles on it since the restoration. The undercarriage is a little dusty but is still in excellent condition and can be easily cleaned up with some detailing. $47,500. 51,233 miles from the dometer. April 12, 2010.
